The Role of The Nautical Institute The Institute fulfils its role in many different ways. Membership by proven qualifications helps to set standards. The technical committees ensure that professional opinion and advice is fed back to the industry's decision making bodies. The publications written by practitioners for practitioners provide the best operational guidance available and the branches encourage professional development in local areas. The presence and influence of The Nautical Institute confers professional standing on seafarers and those with nautical qualifications. SEAWAYS is the monthly journal which links members and provides the opportunity to keep up-to-date and share ideas as well as reinforce the sense of belonging to the fellowship of the sea. The Confidential Marine Accident Report Scheme (MARS) is offered as a service to all. Reports are translated into four languages and distributed globally. All members are encouraged to participate in this scheme and the reports are widely used in safety training. The Nautical Institute provides Accreditation and Validation services to the international shipping community. The courses accredited at present are for Oil Spill Response, Dynamic Positioning (DP), Stability and Ballast Control for MOUs, Ship Visitors, Safety Officer, Leadership and LNG. The Institute has about 7,000 members and over 40 branches worldwide. The strength of purpose which has enabled the Institute to gain its pre-eminence since it was founded in 1971 can be summarised in the statement: "If we need to improve our profession we must do it ourselves". The Nautical Institute is the way forward in this continuing need, so join now.
