The Mersey Mariners' Group is a forum where maritime organisations in the NW of England can circulate details of their events to each other as well as trying to avoid clashes of dates with other events.
Events List Unveiling of the Liverpool Pier Head Repatriation Memorial A granite plaque to the memory of the FEPOW and internees who returned to Liverpool from captivity in the Far East during the autumn of 1945, is to be unveiled following a Service of Dedication on: Saturday 15 October 2011 11am on the waterfront on Liverpool Pier Head The memorial is a large engraved light grey granite plaque which will have the names of the 21 repatriation ships which docked inLiverpool between 8 October and early December 1945. The ships are listed in two columns, either side of a central dedication. The first repatriation ship to reach Liverpool was the Monowai a New Zealand Hospital ship, on 8 October 1945. Another twenty repatriation ships sailed into the port in the following eight weeks, bringing home over 20,000 FEPOW and civilians. The day of the unveiling will be the 66th anniversary of the docking of the Dutch ship, Nieuw Holland, carrying a number of young Merseyside merchant seaman who had been internees in Changi Gaol in Singapore for over three and a half years. The plaque provides a lasting memorial to all those – men, women and children – who survived captivity in the Far East and returned home through the port of Liverpool. For many, the battle to survive did not end when they returned home.
The plaque will be situated alongside other Second World War maritime memorials on a raised stone structure facing the River Mersey, near to the newly-opened Liverpool Museum. Scattering of Ashes - It is possible to arrange to scatter ashes on the River Mersey, courtesy of Mersey Ferries. They can be contacted on (0151) 330 1482 to arrange a date and time. Mersey Ferries do not charge for the service but you and your party do have to pay the normal fare. The Captain of the ferry usually stops the ferry upriver depending on the tide and wind thus allowing a short time for prayer and remembrance before committing the ashes to the Mersey. If you wish a chaplain from the Mersey Mission or Stella Maris to accompany you, they can be contacted on (0151) 920 3253 [This item courtesy of Peter Devlin, Stella Maris].
