2021 Annual Seminar and Dinner Cancelled Your NI Branch committee met last night (minutes to follow) and discussed, amongst other things, the annual Seminar and Dinner. This is usually held in Liverpool in October. The matter is covered in the minutes, but Captain Mathison felt it was important to get this message out quickly and with a little more explanation. Looking astern, 2020’s Seminar and Dinner was, of course, cancelled. The hotel very kindly rolled over the contract to this year. Looking ahead to this autumn, things are far from clear in terms of Covid, roadmaps and possible third waves. Your committee is unwilling to take the risk of contracting anything with the hotel or with sponsors which involves financial risk. Also, we don’t wish to start collecting monies from guests only to have to return them. Therefore, we have taken the decision to cancel the 2021 formal Annual Seminar and Dinner. At the same time, we’re mindful that 2022 will mark the 50 th Anniversary of the founding of the Nautical Institute. Our Branch was where it all started: we were the VERY FIRST ONE! For that reason, 2022 will be a very special year for us. Our decision about this year’s Dinner admits the need to retain sufficient reserves so that we may celebrate next year in a manner befitting the Founder Branch. [As an aside, if you have any ideas of what you would like to see – or participate in – please feed your ideas through. There are no fixed plans yet, but we’re gearing up for events starting in March 2022 and lasting the year. Branch activity will of course need to complement, and dovetail with, HQ initiatives]. In lieu of the 2021 Liverpool Seminar and Dinner we’ve decided to host a less formal event at Fleetwood (date TBC, probably November). We will combine NI presentations to cadets and others, hold a seminar and then finish the day off with a social event and an informal buffet on the Campus. There will be a modest cost to Members attending, but the financial risk to the Branch is negligible. We hope you will support this event and will let you know as soon as we’ve firmed up the day and other arrangements.
